Of course, you ought to ask t DIY is as well to ensure that when one says they know you can see whether they actually do.

Yes, but think about who you're talking about.

(Having killfiled him, it's always /interesting/ to see people attempt to have sensible conversations with him....)

I'm thinking about who asked the question, and worrying that maybe DIY means something more, um, adult, as well as what I thought it meant...

It can mean something more *adult* while still using the same words.

You don't believe for a moment that I intended the conversation to be sensible, did you?

Having just read someone else's comment, I'm now not entirely sure I know what DIY is. I hope it involves shelves and can't-believe-it's-not-nails and such things.

On this occasion, it's things like putting up a curtain-rail and curtains in the spare room, and making sure that the door to the spare room has a handle on each side, and that they actually work to open the door.

By which I mean that my first language is German and my primary language is English (or at least is until I move to Switzerland for the summer, ulp).

I can only think of two possible meanings for DIY - one is the standard meaning involving various handiwork - and the other is a euphemism for masturbation. I'd expect everyone to know at least the standard meaning!

I had to explain to an older colleague today what I found funny about the company name "BJ Services"... She'd already referred to a number of other possibly rude company names on our customer list. She asked me about 5 times what was funny about the name...

yeah, people have different ideas sometimes.

Several years ago on a trip to Stockport I think the train had just left Macclesfield when we saw a large building with a sign occupying the entire width of the building saying "S&M SUPPLIES".
How we did laugh.
