Note that the unrelated film "Trainspotting" is set in Edinburgh, a city spelt with a number of letters other than seven. "Glasgow" is not the correct answer, and you can guess again here
I realised that afterward I pressed submit but was required to go away and do some work. I think I was trying to be too clever and have gone back to my original, and I thought too blindingly obvious, answer.
I'm afraid that answer is not it either.
I suspected not, due to the blinding obviousnessness of it.
I noticed that starting-point is an anagram of train-spotting.
And that "station" is a subset of both.
But that doesn't make me entirely certain of my answer.
You are very much on the right trail.
I know what you mean in terms of the right answer being obvious once you know what it is, but that is not always the way :-(
Regrettably, you are not.
Excellent clue. Did you write it yourself?
I didn't -- I saw it in a crossword many years ago, but alas I can't remember where.
The recent discussion is here
And I have been known to make use of FifteenSquared as well - very useful for when you're down to the last one or two and can't be bothered to spend another week staring at them, or when you've got them all but can't work out quite how you got the answer to one.
I remember there was an episode of Drop The Dead Donkey where Henry was stuck on the last clue of a crossword. Everyone he mentioned it to (which over the course of the episode was practically everyone, of course) immediately said "oh, I know!" leading to him running away with his fingers in his ears as he wanted to solve it himself. It was a bit like The Likely Lads not wanting to know the score.
Should you not already know and want a pop at it, it was:
I hadn't seen that clue before, but it's just taken me rather less than three seconds to solve it.
It was much the same for every other character in DTDD apart from Henry!
I've managed to get that one.
I tend to do really well if I concentrate but as most of my cryptic crossword solving is over lunch in work concentration levels are low.
Most of my cryptic crossword solving is done as a team with tregenza
over meals. We do far better as a team than either of us can manage on our own!
Wild? quite possibly. In the dark? Very definitely, I'm afraid.
hmmm.... I just thought of a third which would be "Railfan"... I do wonder if that is still too literal though.
This is incorrect, as are "railway" and "station". You may not be thinking too literally, but you may be thinking the wrong kind of literally.
Hmmmm.... I hate not being able to get the answer..
A thought has occured to me but its two words : "head Car"?
/I'll go away now...
D'oh!!! Is it "Notepad"?
the word was floating in my head this morning when I woke up!
Are you going to put us out of our misery?
Well it's 7 letters, but I can't see how you get there from that clue. :0)
I think that one suddenly came to me in a horrible, horrible flash of insight.
Horrible indeed, but not correct.
