| | e.r. | ] | 11:52 AM 12/9/09 · So let me get this straight. The loophole in 'Brand New Day' is that if everyone learns the truth about how things were prior to its inception then things will go back the way they were? Those that have since learned Spidey is Peter Parker remembered knowing it before and can't figure why they forgot to begin with?
- What about other stuff?
- Will MJ & Spidey become married again by choice or by the eventual dissolution of what Mephisto did? Spidey was using organic webbing and had retractable stingers in his forearms...will those come back?
- Spidey was up to lift/pressing 25 tons and then went back to just 10...will he get his boosted strength back?
- What will happen to Aunt May?
- Will the child that Mephisto try to prevent being born still be a part of MJ & Spidey's future or has that ship been sunk?
Etc. Etc. Etc.
By the by, did anyone else find it a bit loopy in a recent Amazing Spider·Man that Deadpool mentioned the whole Green Lantern: Blackest Night thing? |

| | 'to zone to' playlist | ] | 5:34 PM 12/8/09 · Not that I entirely fault FabFunk's line of thought that one's interests should challenge one and enable them to grow...but when I go looking for entertainment that's not at the forefront of my thoughts. Ideally I'm seeking stuff that will, well, entertain me...
...and every so often that stuff is moronic, immature, and lacking a good plot line.
This may go hand in hand with why my choices in porn go more straight to the action and are less story driven.
Then again, I don't always see this (not the porn...necessarily) when I'm picking stuff up at Blockbuster. Yeah, not so much a Netflix guy. Going thru the new selections, and occasionally the old stuff, is more enjoyable to me then getting stuff thru the mail. Not just because I can take the time to peruse titles and read the back of each movie but also cuz I actually enjoy interacting with the other people there and the employees...
...about 3 of the titles I picked up a little bit ago were due to this really hot girl, I was talking with earlier, combing the aisles for stuff she thought I'd love. In the earlier, she was helping try to track down a copy of Bottle Shock cuz I think that'd make a great gift for Dad come XMAS!
- Got 'til Sunday to watch all of these:
- Terminator Salvation / The Machima Series: apparently an ongoing series for the 'Terminator' franchise, CGI, focused on resistance fighter Blair Williams.
- The Goods / Live Hard, Sell Hard:
- Thirst: winner at the Cannes Film Festival, directed by Park Chan·Wook. Plot involves a priest that survives a blood transfusion that turns him into a vampire. Believe it or not, it's a love story.
- GI Joe / Resolute: a new animated series, or one·shot, that contains elements of the recent movie and the original series.
- The Brothers Bloom:
- Franklyn: an interesting conflict betwen parallel worlds, focused on London and the futuristic Meanwhile City.
- The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou:
- Blood / The Last Vampire:based on the anime/manga brought to stunning real life.
- Angels & Demons:
- Ice Age / Dawn of the Dinosaurs:
Only felt the need to give descriptions of the ones I was pretty sure were more eclectic.
Truth be told, some of these may stink but I won't know for sure until I watch them. It was enough for a viewing that they caught my attention. Usually only grab 8 movies at a time but a certain someone got me to get a couple extra, almost grabbed Aliens In the Attic...
...probably will next time. |

| Liverpool = Terminus |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|01:27 pm] |
And so our thoughts turn again to the UK.
Naturally, I've been thinking a lot about the UK lately, and today I wanted to share some more thoughts about the British invasion.
Some years ago, I was writing a series of stories, which I called, "The Encyclopedia Capricciosa," a sort of science fiction history of music, with stories spaced every 5 years. I'd written stories for 1915 (about the Italian Futurists making music with very weird instruments), 1965 (about surface guitar), 1975 (about glam rock), and 1990 (about an effort to sequence Michael Jackson's genome). You can read them here: http://www.frankwu.com/storieshome.html
One story I always wanted to write and never got around to was about how the UK saved rock and roll. Rock and roll! The joyful noise without which I can't do art! The songs that mark the milestones of my time on this planet! The soundtrack of my life!
My story was intended for 1960, and it detailed how the UK saved rock and roll from disappearing off the face of the planet.
In 1960, rock was in bad shape. Elvis was in the army (and soon to return with non-rock pablum like "It's Now or Never"). Buddy "Peggy Sue" Holly, Ritchie "La Bamba" Valens and Big "Chantilly Lace" Bopper had all perished in a plane crash. Eddie "Summertime Blues" Cochran had died in a taxi. Jerry Lee "Great Balls of Fire" Lewis was blacklisted for marrying his 13-year-old cousin (!). Those who said that rock was just a passing phase seemed right.
But it wasn't dead, it was like a great empire of glorious dissonance, slowly falling, slowly dying. But it would rise again. And here we see the parallel between this period of music and Asimov's Foundation books. Rock would rise again, eventually, but we needed to shorten the period from maybe decades to... perhaps five years. Why five years? Because rock and roll seems to complete destroy and remake itself every five years - five years being the school/prison term of an American high school student held back a year for bad behavior. And a new sub-genre of music seems to crop up every five years (surf guitar, psychedelia, glam rock, heavy metal, disco, rap, technorave, dance, hiphop, mashups, in succession).
But just as the Foundation stories required a Terminus - a depository of all knowledge, the seed from which to grow a new civilization - so rock and roll needed a foundation in 1960.
And that foundation was Liverpool, more specifically the docks of Liverpool. 45s from the dead Buddy Holly and the blacklisted Jerry Lee Lewis had found their way onto freighters from America that crossed the ocean, to be unloaded in Liverpool. There they found their ways into the hands of a Liverpool College of Art student who was remaking his old skiffle band into a rock and roll band. A band that would name itself as a pun on Buddy Holly's band "the Crickets" (and later record three of Holly's songs). They were British lads with Liverpudlian accents, but they sang like Americans, because they listened to American rock and roll. And their band that would spearhead the British invasion and signal the rebirth of rock and roll with a triumphant journey to America in February 1964. It was their first journey to America, but it was a return trip of the music that the ships had carried across the ocean, a journey culminating in hysteria at an airport and a triumphant appearance on Ed Sullivan - a journey almost exactly five years after the Day the Music Died.
Rock and Roll was reborn, and Liverpool was the Terminus, the Foundation, that had restored the music of our lives.
(More random thoughts about the UK on their way.) |

Hello every... one. I'm the only one here, aren't I? Well, I'm about to purge my journal for legal reasons, and I was wondering if any of you lovely people would like to host my Ford/Arthur story so it doesn't just disappear? It was called " Evolutionary Throwback" and a few people liked it. I was so proud of finishing it and would be sad to just throw it away... |

Vortex Vagabonds & Rift Raff at vortex_rift invites all Doctor Who and Torchwood icon makers (we like to call them iconographers) to submit 1-7, LJ-sized, still icons that they would like to have a fanfic based on. The dates to submit icons are between now and December 21, 2009. Any Doctor, pairing, character(s), crossover, rating that the icon maker would like to have an iconfic (fanfic) based on is welcome.
Torchwood and Doctor Who fanfic writers will choose a submitted icon to use as inspiration for a new, original iconfic (fanfic) beginning January 1, 2010. Again, iconfics may be any length, rating, pairing, genre, crossover, character(s) etc..
Visitors to Vortex Vagabonds & Rift Raff will be asked to vote on their favorite icons and iconfics and award banners will be distributed monthly.
Come and check out the new LJ community at vortex_rift and submit some icons; or starting Jan, 1, 2010, choose an icon and write a new fanfic.

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, has sisters called Maggie and Lisa, and parents called Homer and Marge. He didn't want to name Grampa Simpson after his own grandfather, so let the writers choose a name. The writers chose the name Abraham, which coincidentally is also Groening's grandfather's name.

So my mom today asked me what I wanted for Christmas. After my default answer of "Money", she gave me a spending limit and then I said, "Doctor Who Season 4." "How much is that?" she asks. "Well," I reply, "Amazon.com is having a sale" Thank you wulfae for the heads up!! "so it's only $40 instead of $100."
So knowing what she intended to give me for Christmas, I proceeded to order Season 4 plus the Black Guardian Trilogy and Star Trek but that's beside the point. Peter Davison on DVD that I don't already have? YES PLEASE!!!
It comes on Monday and I don't have to wait 'til Christmas to watch 'em. :D Yay for my mommy! |

Adolf Hitler targeted the Jews in the Holocaust not simply out of hate, but for strategic reasons. Describing his plan to take over Germany, and then Europe, he wrote:
I scanned the revolutionary events of history and… [asked] myself: against which racial element in Germany can I unleash my propaganda of hate with the greatest prospects of success? …I came to the conclusion that a campaign against the Jews would be as popular as it would be successful. Jews, Hitler figured, were already well hated and, thus, would lend themselves to demonization quite easily.
However, Ronald Berger writes in his essay The “Banality of Evil” Reframed, once it was decided that the Jews would be targeted, “the most immediate difficulty that confronted the Nazis was the construction of a legal definition of the target population”.
Who was Jewish? At first, the Nazis defined Jews as non-Aryan. But this became problematic because nations with whom Germany wanted to ally (e.g., Japan) were arguably non-Aryan. The regime settled on a definition that linked non-Aryan-ness to religion. Both racial and religious characteristics could qualify one as “Jewish.” Source, with pictures instruments for measuring Jewishness: Sociological Images |

My wife Brianna wrote this missive for my blog (y'all may remember her as Barbarella at Eastercon in 2007, or from her art, or from the technology blog she just set up at http://www.briannaspacekat.com/ ).
Anyway, here's what she posted on my lj:

Frank is far too modest to ask you to vote for him for TAFF on his blog. But I’m not. Can you think of anyone who represents America better than Frank Wu? He loves baseball, freedom, and even voted for Arnold Swartzenager. Taral Wayne called him “the second nicest guy in fandom,” and I agree.
Here is a heartwarming story of how much Frank Wu loves America.
There Frank was, hitch hiking in Kentucky - when he was is picked up by the Sheriff and arrested for vagrancy. They charged with resisting arrest and sentenced him to 35 days in jail. Being trapped inside that cold, wet, stinking cell gave Frank flashbacks of his horrible days as a POW in Vietnam. Crazed with PTSD, Frank fought off the cops , fled from the jail, stole a motorcycle and hid in the nearby mountains. He became the focus of a bloody nationwide manhunt.
(This actually might be the plot of “Rambo: First Blood.” I can’t remember.)
Do you love freedom and liberty? Sure you do. That’s why you should vote for Frank for TAFF by clicking on this link.
http://taff.org.uk/ballots/taff2010.html
Even if you don’t vote for Frank, and are reading this blog because he is your bitter enemy please vote! All kidding aside, TAFF is a very worthy, important cause!

[Dec. 8th, 2009|03:55 pm] |
Each year, at our Atlanta Gallifreyans' December meeting, we have a winter holidays dinner (I'm saying winter holidays, because there are rather a number of them, just not Christmas!). :)
Our next meeting will be Saturday, the 19th of December. We are hoping to get an early start, so we will let everyone know closer to the date how early we can arrive at the site, which will be, as usual, the Doraville Civic Center, near the intersection of I-285 and Buford Highway, on the north side of Atlanta, GA, USA.

| What's a bone in your body that you can never break? |
[Dec. 8th, 2009|11:24 am] |
Your (LOL) funny bone.
But your funny bone isn't actually a bone at all. Running down the inside part of your elbow is a nerve called the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve lets your brain know about feelings in your fourth and fifth fingers. It's also one of the nerves that controls some movement of your hand.
You get that funny feeling when the ulnar nerve is bumped against the humerus (say: hyoo-muh-rus), the long bone that starts at your elbow and goes up to your shoulder. Tapping your funny bone doesn't do any damage to your elbow, arm, or ulnar nerve. But it sure feels strange!
