Good and Bad [Dec. 9th, 2009|09:07 pm]

nellorat
GOOD: No work today, so I could lazily sleep in and still have hours for Habitat Renewal. Last week, just before the December SAT, was so busy that I'm not even worrying about too little work.

BAD: I have a vaginal/labial yeast infection. It's partly my own fault that it got so bad: I almost never get them, and my bg has been good, so I didn't notice it coming on or even was in denial. I canceled yoga today--"Believe me," I told YogaJane, "noticing what's happening in my body is one of the LAST things I want to do right now." She understood fully. OTC miconazole, how I love you.

Mood: relaxed & ready for Habitat Renewal

I started this captioning lark about nine weeks ago, and I've just had my fifth front page. Which is - in my little world at least - something to be mildly pleased about.

As my past problems with embedding have shown that larger pictures tend to get their captions cut off - and this picture happens to be a rather big one - I'll just give you the url: ihasahotdog.com/2009/12/09/funny-dog-pictures-no-mailman

[Current Music |Richard Herring Podcast]

The goodness that was Tuesday started even earlier than I reported in my Laundry Blogging just yesterday. As my morning shift started a bit later than usual, I used the time to run an errand over at South Norwood. The bus arrived promptly and my errand was over promptly.

I still had about an hour to kill before getting into work so I decided, since it was a sunny morning, to head up to one of my favourite spots on the Tramlink Network. With My Trusty Lumix whipped out, here are a few of the shots I took...

[Current Mood | on time for a change]

You ever see a fanvid that might not even be that spectacular but the song gets lodged in your head immediately? Well, the fanvid that started me on this song is pretty fucking phenomenal, but the lyrics got into me deeper than the brilliant editing.

Astronautalis - The Wondersmith And His Sons

I am a soldier baby,
who works just like a slave,
sweating through the pain of digging his foxhole that he know is just a grave.
You trust me don't you baby?
You'd hand your life to me.
Let's walk along the wire and watch the muzzles flash like lightning.

A smile safe-crackers understand is rendering this steady hand obsolete,
you thought you caught my slight of hand, but you could never understand,
no not me.

Father was a charming man with much hidden up his sleeve,
I wonder if this is what he planned when he taught his tricks to me.
The youngest was a clever boy cracking calculus by three,
the eldest was a practical and obsessively clean,
then there was me:

I was born a charming man with silver tongue, pearl teeth.
This's never how it's 'sposed to end, we're promised all we dreamed
The envy of the Everyman our family seemed complete,
our father was a charming man, our mother a serene.

have the rest of the lyrics. )

this would be a testing superiority complex, if I'm studying Adler correctly [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:34 pm]

speccygeekgrrl
[Current Mood | calm]

Blew through my Botany final, as usual the first one done, plus there were five questions of extra credit and I'm certain I pegged them all. It's really too bad the school doesn't allow A+ grades, I so would have one in the bag if I could.

Phht, listen to me. Like an A isn't good enough. I'm arrogant, aren't I?

I have nothing to be arrogant about-- I still have to study for both my psych finals and I'm going to do a skim job for Abnormal Psych. If I have time I'll try writing the essays for Personality beforehand like I did last time-- which was a good strategy, I got a B+, which confused me because I thought I did a better job that time than the first time. Whatever. I'm not too worried about it, just... mildly concerned. I should probably look up the questions before I make a call on how worried to be.

I have a mantra, and that mantra is "This is all that stands between you and freedom and it is tiny in the grand scheme of things." It keeps me calm.

Tomorrow after all the tests are done, I get to go meet up with a career counselor and let her tell me what things an ENFP is good at and hope that "social worker" is in that list because, uh, I'm not entirely sure why I want to be one except for the rather vague goal of "I want to help people" but that's better than nothing, and I would like to be good at it if I'm going to do it. I mean, it seems like something that the personality type would fit.

Maybe I could be an affirmation coach for self-conscious people. I don't like myself much, but I can make you like yourself more...? xD

[info]ajodasso, I got your postcard today! It's lovely. ♥ Thank you.

Haved I raved about Rachel recently? [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:04 pm]

[Current Mood | cheerful]

Seriously, my adoration just grows and grows. Her coverage of abortion-related terrorism tops anything else I've seen on TV by miles, and that alone is reason for me to love her. Her insistence on letting people finish sentences, and civil but vehement debate, is a breath of fresh air. And I can't wait to get home and see her oh-so-politely take apart Richard Cohen and his gay-fixin' cuddle-therapy (it's waiting on the DVR).

Geek-crushes are so funny. And I've got a massive one; she's even showed up in my dreams once in a while, despite it being abundantly obvious that even in a perfect "she's available, I'm available, we live in the same circles" kind of world, we'd be totally and completely incompatible. Under most circumstances that kills my crushes, but there's something about sexy celebrity brains (mmmm... tasty, tasty brains!) that eludes that internal logic filter. Also on that list: Bill Nye, Eddie Izzard, Stephen Colbert, Margaret Cho, Penn Gillette (even despite his excessive libertarianism and dislike for animals). My brain is so much more sensible about "real-people" crushes. In fact, I think one of the weirder, although nicer, things I've noticed about getting older is that I really don't do "unrequited" anymore. Almost always these days, as soon as I determine someone isn't interested, it kills my own potential interest. Same thing when I notice a major incompatibility (strong preference for monogamy, dislike of animals, etc) -- crush goes *phzzzzt* Damn. Could've used _that_ when I was younger. It was really noticeable with my crush on AwesomeBoss; as soon as I learned we weren't orientation-compatible, it just went away. About six hours of "well, darn/*relief*", and then direct to comfortable work-friendship. Given that that's the most powerful crush I've had in years, what a massive change from the years of teen and twenty-something pining I used to be subject to! Hoorah for that!

And since I've been so remiss about posting recently, how about a meme from [info]greeniezona?

1. Elaborate on your default icon.
Until yesterday, it was an Iranian protest photo, and I really struggled with switching away from that, because I don't think that protest movement is over by a long shot, and I've still got a lot of hopes for their progress. At the moment it's a Fry and Laurie screencap, because I love "Bits of Fry and Laurie" even above Python for surreal and inexplicable sketch comedy. I haven't really decided if I'm settled on that one for a while or not, though.

2. What's your current relationship status?
Hypothetically involved but totally incapable of coping at the moment? I don't really know what to say about it right now. I'm in a primary relationship with a property on W. 41st St. Lunatickle and FabulousMissT and Serpentseye are so amazingly tolerant of all the weirdnesses in my head, and my utter distractibility/single-mindedness/libido swings. Since this is cross-posting to Facebook, I'll elaborate a bit more, although I know the LJ folks already know all this. Been in open relationships for the past 15+ years. It's really rare for me to form primary partnerships, but the ebb and flow of non-primary involvements in my life has been pretty wonderful and comfortable, and sometimes extremely long-term. For me, chosen family (like the Household, none of whom are romantically involved with me), combined with my rather odd and unpredictable dating life, seems to be the comfortable fit that suits my psychological needs. I've been seeing Lunatickle and MissT for eight or nine years now, although their move to MD means we see a lot less of each other these days. Serpentseye and I have wandered through a variety of dynamics in the several years we've known each other. I think the one-word answer to this question (too late!) is: "Lucky"

3. Ever have a near-death experience?
The car accident with Chad, years ago, is probably the closest I got. At least enough to spend a good deal of time thinking about how incredibly lucky I was to still be walking and still have my best friend. I have a tattoo over the vertebrae I fractured, done on the one-year anniversary of the accident, in celebration.

4. Name an obvious quality you have.
I'm really low-energy, and really opinionated. That's two. I'm also overly verbose, and incapable of saying in a sentence what could adequately be said in a paragraph. So there.

5. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
My cell phone ring tone is "Can You Picture That" by the Electric Mayhem (Muppets). It's probably the single most likely song to get stuck in my head.

6. Name a celebrity you would marry:
Wouldn't marry anyone, except for overwhelming practical reasons like health care. Don't really want anything to do with the institution. The one I'd be most curious to explore an involvement with in real life? How about that? Eddie Izzard or Alan Cumming, hands down. Smart and sexy and queer-flavored in wonderfully appealing ways, both of them. If I were to start including less widely-known queer sexuality activists, the list would grow exponentially, but they live so much more within my world that it feels less comfortable to play those sorts of meme games. That's got a lot more of a hero-worship element than just "celebrity crush", and it's a different thing.

7. Who will cut and paste this first?
I haven't the foggiest, and I'm not generally a fan of meme-related peer-pressure.

8. Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
Janis Joplin a few times. I don't really see it, but given how much I adore her, I took it as a huge compliment. And despite how she felt about her looks, I always thought she was gorgeous.

9. Do you wear a watch? What kind?
Nope. What's happening to the watch industry these days? How have cellphones affected the market? I know I haven't worn a watch since I started carrying a cellphone, and it seems to be the pattern I see with other folks, too.

10. Do you have anything pierced?
Tongue, earlobes, both labia, and clit hood. Have had a number of others over the years, but that's what's left these days.

11. Do you have any tattoos?
Boy howdy. Wu-fu over my lower spine, Dawn Treader on my shin, Swallowtail Kite on my ankle, fertility figures over my upper arm, back, side, and hip (so far). The latter will eventually eat my first piece, a yin-yang surrounded by my snake's pattern on my hip. When the tax rebate comes in, time for another session. My current plans will eventually lead to pretty full coverage over my entire back, both hips, both thighs, and possibly further. Other more tentative ideas will cover most other available skin space if the budget becomes available. (for those who're curious, lots of extra info under my bodyart tag: http://moominmuppet.livejournal.com/tag/bodyart, and some pics from right after my last session here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/moominmuppet/sets/72157620020831613/ (not worksafe)

12. Do you like pain?
Depends on the type and intensity. I'm not a fan of stomach cramps or stubbing my toe, but I do like some relatively intense sensation play. I do generally stop enjoying it once it hits what my brain registers as "painful", but that's a very subjective and random boundary, and is generally very far past what it takes to leave lasting marks.

13. Do you like to shop?
Bookstores, hardware stores, and online, yes. Most else, no.

14. What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
Two Dr. Peppers out of the machine in the hall.

15. What was the last thing you paid for with your credit card?
Smokes, I think.

16. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
Mom.

17. What is on your desktop background?
At work: http://roflrazzi.com/2009/01/08/celebrity-pictures-tennant-pop-up/
At home: http://www.uphaa.com/uploads/325/underground-lake-china.jpg

18. What is the background on your cell phone?
A nifty image of the Tardis materializing above Earth, but I can't easily track down a copy online to show you.

19. Do you like redheads?
Some of them. I do really love red hair, though.

20. Do you know any twins?
I'm certain I do, but it's escaping my mind who.

21. Do you have any weird relatives?
I _am_ the weird relative. (how long before Jajy1979 points out that in my family, we _all_ are?)

22. What was the last movie you watched?
Haven't been in much of a movie mood recently. Been rewatching the first three seasons of the modern Doctor Who instead. Maybe Up? That was a couple weeks ago, though.

23. What was the last book you read?
Normally I know the answer to this immediately, because it's in my coat pocket. My recent short attention span seems to be affecting my reading life every bit as much as my dating life, though. I don't think I've made it through anything longer than an article in several months (this is supremely weird for me, and my "to read" pile is growing by leaps and bounds as a result).

Well. Whaddya know. Apparently that's all of them.

Hey facebook people -- this entire thing doesn't show up on that wall or whatever's used for primary viewing of other people's statuses and such, does it? Don't want to be spamming folks accidentally. I'm hoping it just drops a link or something.

"Major Winters' March" (yet another bob filk) [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:49 pm]

[Current Mood | weird]
[Current Music |"Colonel Hathi's March"-- Jungle Book OST]

I don't know what it is about Band of Brothers that makes my muse want to write filks. It's just one of those mysteries of the universe, I guess. (Or at least, a mystery of the frightful inner workings of my brain. ^^;) At any rate, I always get an itch to watch BOB around Christmas time-- probably because I spent so much time watching it back when we did the original Berlin By Christmas project at camp_toccoa. I also happened to overhear my nieces watching the original animated Jungle Book, whose soundtrack includes a song called Colonel Hathi's March.

And so, this mutant bunny was born. It's probably not as good as my other two filks but, nevertheless, I am compelled to post. ^^;;

I am still, so very clearly, in need of medical help. ^^;

43. Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino

Possibly the strangest book this year. A series of loosely linked short stories, each using a scientific idea or theme as a jumping-off point for a fantastical fable. I'm sure it's brilliant, but a little too whimsical for me.

Free clothes! [Dec. 9th, 2009|10:18 pm]

thekumquat
[Tags|, ]

Following the success of the Girlie Clothes Swap Party kindly organised by [info]lollipopp over the summer, I was interested to see work's weekly notices advertising the same idea - please bring clean good-condition clothes and accessories in on MOnday by noon, and then from 4-6pm you were allowed into a room where they were all arranged nicely to browse and take. All leftovers would be collected afterwards by "Suit into Loot", part of London Recycling which passes smart clothes to Traid for people who need them and recycling other textiles.

Great idea, given that there's about 700 women in our buildings. UNfortunately the newspapers are referring to the idea of 'clothes swaps' as 'swishing', which as my colleague said, sounds like car keys ought to be involved. Which put an image of our directors into my mind that I really preferred not to think about! Even worse than baby TMI from my boss (and bear in mind that if I think it's TMI...)

And handily, I hadn't gone through my work clothes during the summer, so I pulled out three pairs of too-short or tight trousers, a couple tops and a necklace. In exchange, I ended up with a very nice long black velvet shirt, a good pair of boring trousers for work, and a few T-shirts. A win, I think. One happy woman went off with two pairs of my trousers.

And about 10 bin-bags of wearable clothes were taken off to new homes, or failing that recycling (when I left it became clear that anyone who was a size 8 was in for a treat as that was half the leftovers).

If anyone would like help from Suit into Loot/Traid to organise a similar event at their work, details are here: http://www.suitintoloot.org.uk/campaign.html

Issue eight of YETI magazine arrived today. I noticed it because it has a Zola Jesus interview, and I am fond of Nika and her noises. But it’s a monstrous 200-page thing packed with all kinds of interesting stuff. Also, an eighty-minute CD full of rare/unreleased music by shitloads of people. Here’s Yeti’s site, with the information you want. It’s USD $11.95, or USD $19.95 if, like me, you’re ordering from outside the USA. For the amount of content here, that’s really bloody cheap.

Oh, and I got this last week., but I want to mention it: Julianna Barwick’s sublime FLORINE, previously only available as an mp3 EP from eMusic, is now available as a CD. This was one of my very favourite discoveries of 2009, and I’m so glad to now have a physical copy to hand. Julianna’s mailing these out herself, and mine arrived with a nice little note on the back of the envelope.

dammit janet! [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:47 pm]

hathy_col
So, last night I went out in my pants.

...

Okay, as a sentence that's quite good all by itself, but I feel I should add context. Basically, it was Agreed that a group of friends and I would go and see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Last night was the actual night, and I flung myself home work and back out the door again faster than I've ever needed to before. The agreement was that we'd all get ready at Matt's, so it was a bit of a shock to arrive with no make-up on etc to find everyone arriving all ready.

So, a frantic five minutes later, and then another few minutes figuring out my corset etc etc, we piled in the back of Dobbin's very small car. The last time I did this, I was seventeen, which should tell you how long ago it was that was. Funnily enough, I've grown since then and so had the rest of us. Giggling anyway, we made our way to Manchester, got slightly lost, and then managed to find a decent parking space near the theatre.

We tottered our way there in high heels, feeling very self-conscious. My cunning plan to wear two pairs of tights seemed less cunning, given they were black fishnets and red tights. I felt a bit better when we got to the theatre, which was a glorious mash-up of lots of people of both genders wearing stockings and corsets and with much more make-up on than me.

Rocky Horror was, of course, absolutely awesome. We had quite good seats, and danced along like mad people, and laughed so hard that I was weeping, in places. It was a quite clever performance, with a very attractive Frank, and lots of unexpected humour and playing the audience. Dave Spikey was the narrator, so lots of local humour about Denton ("six hundred kids in the local school, only four surnames") and generally brilliant times. It was also the signed version of the show, so a very enthusiastic man in corset, suspenders and rather attractive heels stood at the side of the show, signing along and dancing rather enthusiastically, which I felt was a lovely touch.

I was gutted to go home, actually, but we all had very early morning things to deal with. So home we went, after striding through Manchester in our underwear feeling very confident indeed.

PICTURES OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Tomorrow I am off to St Andrews, which promises to be lots of fun indeed! I should probably try to do things like packing, though.

I celebrated the middle of the week this week with a lovely gentle half-hour yoga and relaxation class - this is a habit I could happily form :-)

Dinner is done and dusted, which suits my metabolism (by 8pm, I'm too tired to be hungry, and by 9pm, it's bed-time) ... just a little light Flooger-molestation (in the form of his blood tests and insulin injections) left on my To-Do list tonight. (Obviously, lots of things like 'stepping on the cats' permanently on my To-Don't list).

Hopefully, Mater's Citizen Advocate was able to visit and talk with her today - and hopefully, Graze will successfully deliver a selection of fresh and dried fruits to Mater's bed tomorrow (and she'll enjoy the benefits of eating them).

I'm also writing a few Christmas cards ...

"In September, Public Policy Polling released the stunning results of a survey designed to measure extremism in the mainstream. Among other things, the poll found that 21% of Americans believe that Obama is the Antichrist or may be. Among Republicans, 34% believe the president is or may be the Antichrist, while 64% of that party's voters say he is not or may not be an American citizen." -- Mark Potok, "Gathering Storm", Intelligence Report (published by the Southern Poverty Law Center), Winter 2009, IFC.

21%? Twenty-one percent of Americans believe our president is or may be the Antichrist? I am appalled.

(If you take these statistics a step further and make the reasonable [I think] assumption that all of these people belong to the 78.4% of Americans who identify as Christian of some form or another [the Antichrist being a Christian theological concept], you're looking at something in the neighborhood of 26% of American Christians who believe this.)

So far today I've done post office stuff, done some tidying (real and virtual) and revised three more chapters of Grass King. I'm still liking it, though there's a sticky transition in c. 8 that I can't get quite right.
Later on, I'm ferrying Caro winolj and the Evil Ramses to the vet, then perhaps making apple and cranberry pie.

Okay, everyone pity me. For four weeks I've been struggling to find work, to pass out resumes, to network.

In the past 24 hours I've gotten one volunteer opportunity, two freelance pricing requests, and two face-to-face interview appointments. Okay, I appreciate it, but... could the universe like, you know, space it out a little?

Better, stronger (at least 80% ABV), faster (though he now tends to go in circles due to the club foot), more incestuous...
We have the capability to build the world's first Byronic man."

I blame the BBC. Putting a story like this on the radio when I'm just waking up. I was sure they said "Byronic fingers". Not quite sure what they meant but...

Muhahahahaha! Intelligent Grappling lives! [Dec. 9th, 2009|07:26 am]

[Current Mood | giggly]

A long time ago, I wrote the "Intelligent Grappling FAQ," in which I proposed that gravity was such an important force in the universe that it could never have happened by chance, and that "gravity" was a weasel-term physicists used to confuse the public. "Gravity only attempts to describe what objects do. It does not explain WHY they do them. It is that challenge that Intelligent Grappling is intended to meet." Later, I added:
6. In order to accept Intelligent Design, must I accept Intelligent Grappling as well?

YES. Intelligent Design says that there is a non-naturalistic, conscious designer at work at the biological level. Intelligent Grappling says that there is a non-naturalistic, conscious grappler at the physicial level. Accepting a naturalistic explanation for one phenomenon but a non-naturalistic explanation for another is a philosophically corrupt position and we do not advocate it.
While this is an important point at the end, and the key philosophical point (if you accept a tinkerer god in biology, you must accept one in physics), I never thought that the ID folks would be so stupid as to actually adopt it.

I was wrong:
Everything is made of atoms. Atoms have no means to relocate themselves in a rapid and precise way to build any living thing. To make an average adult's replacement red blood cells alone, over 4900 quadrillion atoms per second must be sorted from the food we have eaten, selected, assembled, and delivered to our blood stream; that is every second of every day of our adult life.
Muahahahaha! It's not just biology, it's every physical reaction that requires constant, divine intervention in order to happen with the accuracy necessary to keep us alive. This is divine providence made creepy: you're not just a bag of wet meat, you're a bag of wet meat that would fall apart instantly if it weren't for the angels holding you together.

Governor Closes State Offices, UW Campuses

Posted: 8:58 am CST December 9, 2009

Gov. Jim Doyle has closed state offices and all University of Wisconsin campuses on Wednesday due to the snow storm. The governor's office said public safety, public health, and emergency response workers will still report to work and those services will still be provided to the public...

Forecasters expected 9 to 16 inches of snow to fall in parts of Wisconsin. The National Weather Service said some parts of the state are expected to get 15 inches of snow, with most likely to fall Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.

=====

When I went to bed last night there was already 6 inches poised like a hat on our birdfeeder and I knew then there was no way I'd try to drive to work. I would burn a vacation day if I needed to. BUT as it turned out they closed our Madison office.

So I get an actual snow day without penalty! I'm gonna write out holiday carda and make cookies, so there!

I'm sure it was here a little while ago!

Riding on Monday was a bit disorganised (in that the whole 'having a lesson' thing never really got going: I'm hoping that it was just the fact that there were two new people in it, one of them who didn't seem up to the level, and not a sign of the teaching going crap again), but Taylor and I did lots of nice practice on our canter transitions, so it wasn't too bad. Still couldn't get a decent sitting trot, so I'm just going to blame it on him being wonky, I think.

Taylor again today, in a bit of a bitty lesson: I was late getting there (bus bah), and Taylor takes ages to get ready because he has so many boots and bandages. When we were ready to start, Jackie had someone in the school so (I am a coward...) we went out for a walk around the block , and then into the field for a quarter of an hour of (slightly muddy) canter. Nice lesson, and given it was my last one with Keeley I wasn't too bothered about the walk-and-talk to work ratio!

Mike back. Much better. Approve of Mike being back.

PS: Seriously, what is the deal with bananas on BoingBoing lately...?

PPS: Coo, power cut. I hope those burglar alarms aren't going to go off all day... Oh, no, there we are. Phew.

Morning heart attac [Dec. 9th, 2009|01:49 pm]

elfy
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Most of you probably know I'm writing my diploma next year. I have to apply for it now. As in, by 14th of december, I think.
And, well, to be able to apply I had to take a certain amount of courses and seminars and whatnot in the last years. We had to collect signatures from the professors to get the points, we had to hand in these slips of papers with the signature, so everything goes to a person called Mr. G., who in the end will say 'Yes, you may give it a try' or 'No, you still need to take this and that class'.
I KNOW I was late with handing in some of the slips. But not totally, totally late. My last slips I handed in ... last thursday, I think.
Well, today I went to Mr. G. to ask him if he got everything.
It was not something I had to do. I calculated probably a hundred times if I took all the right courses, if I didn't miss anything, if I managed to cover all subjects. And well, he took a slip of paper and marked on it what I have, what I need to have etc. And in the end there were like three courses missing and I was like WTF?! I saw two slips from thursday were still missing, but only one of those covered a needed course and I was all OMG! WTF! What if I did something wrong?! But I checked everything a hundred times! What am I going to do now?! Did I really take the *wrong* courses?! As in, it was not that I didn't have enough, just it seems, not the right ones.
Oh well. Yes, as you can guess, in the end he was just too stupid to count correcty (Me:"You don't want to tell me these courses don't count because I did MORE than I had to prior to my pre-diploma, do you?!") and I did everything right, he just has to get the two missing slips and everything is fine. But gaaah, panic attac!

Also: Christmas is too close! I barely got any presents done! *more panic*
