| The promise of the horror to come |
[2009-10-31 10:32] |
It's that date.
The date which promises forthcoming horror. Dark and unpleasant things lurk in the shadows, waiting to emerge and trap the unwary. We know the horror is coming, we can only imagine how dreadful it's going to be, and there's nothing we can do to stop it.
Yes, it's 1,000 days until the start of the London Olympics. |

| Past and Forthcoming Conventions |
[2009-04-08 23:12] |
Looks like Eastercon LX will be my fortieth convention (leaving aside one-day conventions such as Dangercon and Picocon, and domestically-hosted weekends).

Possible future conventions:

That's probably enough to be getting on with. It rather looks as if I might be spending my 42nd convention with Sproutlore types, which is slightly counter-intuitive.

Overcharging us three quid -- Not terribly bright. Getting the order wrong (roast potato instead of poppadom) -- Not terribly bright. Serving thing-with-sauce in a basket -- Not terribly bright.
Providing a leaflet "please complete our short survey" and then coding it in a way that doesn't work on two different mainstream industry-standard browsers -- Not terribly bright.

| Bananas. Oh, wait... |
[2008-07-02 19:00] |
As some of you know, I eat bananas when they're covered in black stippling, which is a little riper than some of you like.
I've run out of bananas.
I went to Sainsbury's to buy assorted stuff, including bananas.
They were all bright green. All of them. You might think that the title-bar-background colour of my journal style is bright green, but that's just peanuts to today's Sainsbury's bananas.
So I've got apples instead. Seven of them. Which has confused me totally. It's been some considerable time since I've eaten an apple that isn't in a pie of some sort.
Ah well.

| That recent non-apology |
[2008-03-14 09:40] |
In summary:- LJ has halted the creation of new "basic" accounts, so that the only accounts that can be created henceforth are "plus" (supported by advertisements) and "paid". In addition it's not possible to take an account created after yesterday and revert it to "basic". They have sound business reasons for doing this, reasons which they could easily have announced and tried to defend.
- LJ made this change without announcing it, instead announcing "Other changes you may have noticed are the [...] registration process for new users. We streamlined and simplified things so that now it’s faster and easier than ever to create a LiveJournal account."
- When users noticed that basic accounts had been grandfathered,
jasonshellen (VP of product development for LJ) said "it was more about creating a new registration process that was easier for new users to understand". - LJ have now announced that it "is a business decision. It is, emphatically."
So a senior LJ staffer lied to us, imagining that the userbase was stupid enough not to spot it. Read Jason Shellen's lie and today's News post.
Now I'm not very good at discerning intent and mindstate from LJ posts. It's just barely conceivable that I'm missing some nuances here.
Hence ( another poll ) |

| Apparently this is amusing... |
[2007-12-05 20:05] |
My accountant gets their new servers and workstations this weekend.
I'm just collecting together a load of wallpapers, a screensaver, and one or two other things so that I can roll them out to these new workstations automatically using Active Directory Group Policy. For this purpose I've bundled up all these bits and pieces into a single file which will give the workstations the look-and-feel that the marketing and corporate branding people want them to have.
The name of the file is "BourneIdentity.msi".
Apparently this is amusing... |

I'm going to the BSFA tonight, doing my best not to be confused by the one-off change of venue. I'm currently in the Hoop and Toy, although the only other BSFA type here is aeglefinus. |

| Paging Abi ... |

Abi:
Oh goodness me. My sincere apologies. It really was rather larger than either of us was expecting, wasn't it?
Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I hope that when we do the same tomorrow it's just as good.

| Today I will be... |
[2006-09-20 07:50] |
Off to the Independent Living exhibition in Alexandra Palace today; see some of you there. I'll be the one asleep in a corner somewhere.
On to the ZZ9 London monthly pub meeting in the evening; see some of you there too. Techniques for recognising me which were useful earlier in the day will retain their effectiveness. |

| I have a bug: is it reproducible elsewhere? |
[2006-06-10 10:49] |
Seemingly owing to poor browser support for Windows Mobile 5, I'm unable to post comments from the handset.
I can read LJ, create new top-level posts, navigate round the site with no problem ... but when I try to comment to a post, or reply to a comment, the "post comment" button is missing from the page.
I've reported it to support: http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=595144 But I then discovered that someone else has the same issue and reported it back in March: http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=563484
This only applies when I'm using the handset, and not when I'm using a regular browser from a desktop PC.
The symptoms are the sameon S1 and S2 journalswhether or not I have JavaScript quick-reply disabledwhether I'm using the user's own comment-page style or the site defaultwhether I'm on LJ, GJ or DJ.
Can anyone else who browses from a handheld device let me know if they have the same problem, and which OS/version/browser your handheld uses? |
