Trouble with VMWare 4.5.2 on Windows 2003

We're running VMware Workstation 4.5.2-8848 (the latest build).
Our host server is Windows 2003, a fresh installation fully patched and with nothing else installed.
Our guest OS could be any one of Windows 2000 Server, XP Pro, 2003 server, or Debian Linux on a 2.2, 2.4 or 2.6 kernel.

The VMWare site says that this version of VMWare supports Windows 2003 as a guest OS, but it doesn't mention using it as a host OS.

It keeps falling over. It's done this on a variety of different sets of hardware. It's usually the guest machine (not the guest OS) crashing. The vmware.log file usually grumbles about the IDE or SCSI system in the guest machine failing.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem? I know at least one person here uses VMWare quite a lot.
