What I did last night

I did all sorts of things over the weekend, which I'll be writing about for your information and entertainment later. But first, I'm going to write about what I did last night.

I arrived home from my weekend away mid-afternoon yesterday, and took a few things in from the car. I sorted out a couple of client issues which had arisen since Friday, and then settled down to finish polishing that Doctor Who story you've just read. I posted it. This was about quarter past eleven last night.

And then I went to finish unloading the car. The car alarm went off.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

All the usual techniques for turning off the alarm failed to work. Pushing the buttons on the car key, using the key to unlock the driver's door, inserting it into the ignition and turning it,nothing stopped the alarm.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

I went back to the house, found the other key, and repeated the exercise.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

Neighbour: Can you turn that off?
Me: You know, I never thought of that. Thank you.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

I studied the owner's manual. "To turn off the alarm, either press button A on the key, or use the key to unlock the driver's door and put the key into the ignition."

Beep beep beep beep beep.

Quarter to midnight.

Beep beep beep beep beep.

So I phoned the recovery guys, and they sent out a bloke in a big van. By the time he'd arrived, around a quarter past midnight, the beeping had stopped -- but the car was immobilised. Sulking.

He pressed the buttons on the keys. He unlocked the driver's door with the key, and put the key in the ignition. He repeated the exercise with the other key.

He told me that, just occasionally, the car and the keys lose track of the code number they exchange. In these cases it's necessary to take the thing back to the dealership and let them reprogram it. He said I'd need to phone again in the morning to book a tow to the garage.

So I have a car which won't go, with a boot I can't unlock and three doors that I can't lock. The only door I can lock is the driver's door. And my tow should be arriving shortly.

I'm supposed to be in Dorset today, bounding around on the coast path. It's not going to happen.
