Poll #867793 The pollee's views on the pollster

When I think about dougs...

I want to drag him to my room and indulge in a night of naughtiness without regard to any long-term plans
2(6.9%)
I want to have him alongside me as a partner for the next several years
1(3.4%)
Actually I hadn't thought about it before but one or other of those might be workable
2(6.9%)
I don't have particular things in mind with dougs and anything involving me and him doesn't sound terribly likely
20(69.0%)
Ewww dougs *barfs*
2(6.9%)
Thinking about dougs damaged me irreparably you insensitive clod
0(0.0%)

As for my personal circumstances:

I'm a single person and nothing in my current circumstances prevents me doing whatever I might have in mind with dougs
7(24.1%)
I have a partner or partners and there's an agreement in place about whatever I might have in mind with dougs
1(3.4%)
I have a partner or partners and there's an agreement in place which is general rather than specific but which nevertheless could apply in this case
1(3.4%)
I have a partner or partners but I'm happy to do what I like with dougs anyway and sort out the mess later
3(10.3%)
I don't have particular things in mind with dougs as I told you already
13(44.8%)
Stop making me think about dougs already *barfs some more*
2(6.9%)
My partner thinking about dougs damaged me irreparably you insensitive clod
0(0.0%)

dougs has a big bag full of rope in a variety of convenient lengths.

Why was rope mentioned in this seemingly completely unrelated poll?
5(18.5%)
Hurrah for rope! We can have lots of fun with me tying dougs up!
1(3.7%)
Hurrah for rope! We can have lots of fun with dougs tying me up!
1(3.7%)
Nothing you've said so far is encouraging me to consider getting up to anything with dougs
14(51.9%)
Eww rope! *runs away*
1(3.7%)
A rope-related incident damaged me irreparably you insensitive clod
2(7.4%)

dougs has a violet wand.

I have no idea what a violet wand is nor of the way in which one might be used
5(17.9%)
Now that's interesting -- tell me whether this rope of yours is an insulator or a conductor
8(28.6%)
In fact the longer this poll goes on the less likely I am to pursue the matter
7(25.0%)
*has already run away*
3(10.7%)
Static electricity damaged me irreparably you insensitive clod
1(3.6%)

dougs has a camera.

I imagine he uses it chiefly for landscapes la la la I can't hear you
7(25.0%)
That's excellent -- we can have long conversations about f-stops and shutter speeds
1(3.6%)
I know he does -- I frequently go temporarily blind when he flashes at me at parties
3(10.7%)
*titter* he said "flashes" *tee hee*
3(10.7%)
There are already bad photos of me all over the internet and dougs' camera doesn't scare me a bit

Finally...

I've had this one for ages, I only recently added the caption to point out what it was all about. There are good reasons for liking the 17th century, yes. Mmmmboobies...

Where's the response to the camera saying "Doug has already got over 75 naked pictures of me. Not only do I know of his camera I know of his cute camera stand for close ups" ?

If it makes it any clearer sometimes it's big and sometimes it's not so big.

Why don't you just *ask* her/him/it?

This is one of the questions that arose as part of the aforementioned conversation. In the general case it's partly something to do with my unwillingness to subject someone to a potentially unwanted approach, connected perhaps to my dslike of spam, and therefore a state of mind which I suspect is peculiar to myself. It's also partly an example of the more widely exhibited fear of rejection and lack of any clue about how to set about the whole excercise, how to phrase the question. In the specific case (and, as you clearly suspect, there is a specific case) it's partly to do with the fact that the person I have in mind is someone I only see rarely, and when I do see them either there are loads of people about and the time to ask them doesn't seem right, or when it's just the two of us we spend all the time talking about the general and not the specific. Even when the time is just right, I tend instead to ramble about all sorts of things rather than simply ask.

I have a history of being asked, rather than asking. The evidence suggests I'm not good at the direct approach.

Perhaps I'll ask directly, the next time we're face-to-face.

Fear of rejection is understood. But honestly, what do you have to lose? I imagine the person you have in mind is not the sort that's going to either a) be so offended by your impertinence that they go off in a huff and never speak to you again, or b) laugh at you and tell all their friends to laugh at you too. So what's the worst that could happen? The person says no, and gives you a reason why not. You then continue with whatever relationship you currently have. But if you don't ask, you'll never know.

Also, if the person is female, most women *like* to be asked. They're going to be far more flattered by being asked outright than if they fill in a silly poll and then you ask, as if they were some kind of 'lucky winner'.

Stop trying to encourage people to chase you. It really isn't very attractive!

And finally, if you only see the person rarely, are you sure you know each other well enough to want to ask? Maybe it would be easier for you to spend more time together as friends first, and then the asking won't be such a big step.

Good luck :)

Did you eventually get some closure from your poll. It is the law of sod that the person concerned never saw the poll so you could still be hanging.

I'm confident that the person concerned saw the poll, but closure will have to wait -- see what purple_peril said above about spending more time together as friends, which makes good sense, and what I said about waiting until next time we're face-to-face.

And also what I said about me not being good at the direct approach.

If it's going to be a relationship they have a habit of being complicated all on their own!
Good luck Dougs - just don't tell us too many gory detail please!
