Birthday plans [Feb. 28th, 2007|04:48 pm]
Douglas Spencer
Yes, it's stupidly far in advance. Yes, it's a stupidly long poll. I have no defence.

At the tail-end of September I reach a fannishly significant age, and I'm intending to mark the occasion with a suitably disreputable party.
However since I'm not a great decision-maker, I'm seeking the advice of the readership.

Pretty well any date suits me as I'm not that tied down by work patterns.

All the best people are doing it, how's that for a defence?

Dependant on the results of my poll (and other investigations re: venue) one of those weekends may be very busy. The other is elder Who-lette's birthday. One really does need to book in advance.

Parks: how could you neglect Hampstead Heath?

I've always considered you and I to be amongst the best people. Hurrah!

And how could I forget Hampstead Heath, which regularly tops any list of best places to go.

I am intrigued by the manner in which alexmc appears to have mistaken my fanzine for a pub.

Bloody good name for a pub, though, now you come to mention it...

September. SEPTEMBER.

I'm probably alright for any of those, bar romping. I could mind the coats.

Ah yes, "bar romping", clearly quite similar to regular romping but relying on easy access to alcohol.

At most parties the coats end up piled on the bed. It might get a bit crowded there.

The second weekend I'm in Germany at the German filkcon FilkContinental, so don't have the party then!

Have one major event, and lots of little fun things that people can choose to come to (like a guerrilla picnic, hit Borough Market/M&S/Harrods/Fortnum & Mason and then off to an appropriate park for a picnic with pink drink! Boat trip up or down the river with either real tour guide commentary or with a fake one "and on your left you can see where Marie Antoinette was abducted by aliens and replace by Cleopatra's Noodle"

Hire a double decker bus and do our own tour of London!

Do the guided tour at Great Queen's Street but don't eat in the hotel next door (not good!)

etc. etc.

We'll have to swop dodgy handshakes and substituted secrets at the picnic!

Indeed, I was taught to be cautious, but I think I've become more bold as I got older (the five types of column are Tuscan, Doric, Composite, Newspaper and Nelson's!)

When? A weekend. Where? Anywhere well served by National Rail and TFL. What? Getting rather drunk and talking huge amounts of bollocks. Preferably with groping.

None of these options were present, Mr Spencer! :P

Twelve out of fourteen choices are at the weekend, or nearly so. All the suggested venues are easily TFLible. Many suggested activities involve getting drunk, and I hope that romping will be seen as an acceptable substitute for groping.

I take your point about talking huge amounts of bollocks. I may have to ask you to organise that portion of the festivities.

If we're queueing behind you, we'll have to find other things to grope while we're waiting.

September seems not only a long way off, but likely to be a bit cold for a park thing. I'll think some more before ticking boxes.

I have nothing of relevance to say, except it seems unfair that your 42nd birthday will far outrank my 18th in coolness. Damn you.

Having said that, I do hope you have a good time (yes, I'm early, but I'll forget later :P).

Sat 22nd is our Alex's 16th Birthday, thus the weekend is out for either of us.

The following weekend would be doable for one of us or more if wholesome family friendly content involved - 10 in a bed neither wholesome or family friendly - though I note only 6 have signed up for that so far, so room for extras ;P
