Quoting from the preamble to the service:
- The service is both a legal act and an act of worship. It marks the beginning of the ministry of Nick as Priest in Charge here, and a new stage in the life of this parish. As the mission and ministry of the church are the responsibility of all baptised people, so they come together with their new Priest in Charge and the Bishop to celebrate their ministry and offer themselves afresh to God.
Nick has, for some considerable time (about ten years) been the deanery's Industrial Chaplain, and has more recently additionally served as the Area Dean. He's setting aside his chaplaincy work in order to take on the work of Priest in Charge, but he continues as Area Dean. It's likely to be a difficult time for the parish, with lots of changes in prospect many of which will not be welcomed by the congregation. It's encouraging that we've found a priest who is familiar with the situation, understands the nature of the difficulties, and yet is still prepared to take on the work.
I like Nick. I'm pleased he's found a situation which keeps him in the area, and I feel that the parish is in good hands.
