Prompted by my recent posts, I've invested in some capsules of Vitamin E.
    Take one daily.
    % of RDA: 2680
I wonder if I'm misreading that? Or, if not, are there a couple of dozen people who'd like to share a capsule with me?

It's fairly standard practice to take doses way about the RDA; RDAs are a minimum needed, not what might do you good.

And for some vitamins it has been shown that doses way over the RDA are actually harmful...

For some vitamins and some values of 'way over' (hardly a scientific measure!), this is true. In my opinion, knowing the facts and which warning signs to look for if you're going to take high doses are the key things, but I am well aware it's an area where there's considerable difference of opinion.

Many food substances are poisonous if taken in large enough quantities. However I dont think that 20x RDA of a vitamin is anything to worry about.

For a short period, I don't think there is any danger. However if mega-vitamins are taken over time the fat-solubly ones can build up to toxic levels in the liver. http://health.allrefer.com/news/index.php?ID=2971

Seems about right - my vitamin C tablets are 1000% of the RDA.

That's roughly what I was going to say. Mine are 1000mg each which is apparently 1666% of RDA

There are two views on taking vitamins.
1) is to take them so as to make sure you dont have them missing.
2) is to have loads of it so that it does something more than usual.

I'm currently having fruit juice and Vitamin C many times the RDA to try and help with my cold. Of course I dont really know scientifically if that helps - but then I dont know how the RDA was calculated either.

It's a clue that, as with most vitamin tablets, what you're paying money for is mostly to protect your urine from suffering vtiamin deficiencies.
