Thoughts about the Novacon Art Show [Apr. 14th, 2007|05:02 pm]
Douglas Spencer
Prompted by someone else posting pictures of her artwork, and having been thereby reminded that she was in the art show last year, I've been thinking.

I've done origami workshops at conventions before. In fact I'm down to do one at Year of the Teledu. I restocked on paper at the Japanese Shop in Chester during Eastercon, and I've been folding again.

Those models are all folded from squares about two inches on a side, which means they're mostly between a quarter and a half an inch across (say six to twelve mm in the new money).

Questions: Is it worth me putting something together for the Novacon art show? Is it at all likely that anyone would want to bid, on something that I'd routinely give away free in the bar anyway? Should I attempt something particularly complex for the show?

The blurring of art and craft is a good thing.

Even better in German, where you can sometimes use the same word ("technik") for art and craft and skill and science and design and ...

Yes. Agreed.

There is also the german word 'Kunsthandwerk', which is, 1 to 1 translated 'Artcraftsmanship' or something like that. It means 'Crafts as a form of Art'. It's mostly used for 'old' crafts, like, when things are build by hand, one by one, take some time and are in their own way... art.
Oh, I see, there is the translation 'arts and crafts'... but well, in german it's one word :)

I should have thought of that -- it's the same "Kunst" which is used in the title of J S Bach's work which is normally translated into English as "The Art of Fugue".
