Spam from Sheffield Hallam [Jun. 12th, 2007|05:29 pm]

[Tags|]

Here's a brief unscientific survey.

[ lj-poll-1001884 redacted -- 9 out of 43 self-selecting respondents replied "yes" to a question about whether they'd received spam from Sheffield Hallam University ]

In unrelated news, her LJ profile page says "I will probably drive most of my existing online friends away with constant questions and polls and theories"...

I don't have a me@lj address either, and haven't received the spam.

I believe it is indeed the we-all-know-it's-just-a-poly one.

Yes, I did just now. I've seen various people posting her plea for community members on my friends list, so I must be reasonably closely linked to some people who've already signed up to take part. But other than that, I don't know why I was picked.

I replied politely enough, saying I'd already decided I didn't want to take part and hoped her study was successful. But I did think it was a bit intrusive to actively spam people about it.

Don't suppose you'd mind sharing her LJ username, so I can see what she says about herself?

She's easy to google -- an early hit is her Twitter page, where she uses the same name as she does on LJ -- suebeedoo.

Weird. What's it about? I'm thinking of doing some lj related research myself (but not by spamming people..)

Hypothesis: she's emailing the members of nearly_everyone.

bugshaw, bellanna, watervole fall outside that pattern. She may be trawling other communities.

Almost simultaeously with your comment here, I commented elsewhere (in a friends-locked post from one of the victims) as follows:
It would be helpful if she (herself) posted an explanation somewhere public, so that we could link to it. A public post in her own journal would be ideal, but a comment to my post-with-a-poll would suffice.

I'm glad that you've decided to post a public explanation/apology in your own journal. I won't reply there. It might be worth explicitly revoking the "If you don't wish your comments to be part of my research, please do not comment" clause at the head of your journal for comments to the post concerned.

You'll see from other comments here that some people (mostly people who are professional spammer-killers like myself) won't trust you as far as they could throw you, and have already anticipated any possible explanation you may have as meaningless and typical of spammers. There's some work to be done regaining that trust.

In many cases where someone's put their foot in it, I'd fight hard to see things from their point of view and give them a second chance. I find it very difficult to do this for spammers.

I might have volunteered based on her original postings, but given that she's broken Rule 1 by spamming, no chance, even though I've not received any spam from her.

On the subject of driving away on-line friends... This is just another in a long line of over-reactions. Your actions look very much like bullying, which is unfortunate.
Hence, I wish to unsubscribe from this journal.
