The Stepson's PC [Oct. 18th, 2007|09:50 pm]
Douglas Spencer
The Stepson bought an iPod Nano. It doesn't work with versions of iTunes prior to 7.4.

His PC was equipped with Windows 2000. It doesn't work with versions of iTunes later than 7.3.2.

Ah. Oh.

Also, his PC had a dinky little 8GB disk, about 95% full.

So yesterday I stuck a spare 250GB disk in there instead, and installed XP -- and then went on to install iTunes 7.4.3.

Also AVG, Spybot S&D, AdAware, Firefox, MS Office, Acrobat Reader, Nero, ...

I'm liking Foxit Reader that I downloaded recently, for how much faster it opens PDFs than Acrobat does.

There are iTunes alternatives, but given the state of the rest of the PC, it's probably no bad thing that you did the necessary with his system.

That said, if he only had a 8Gb hard disk, what kind of processor and memory does he have in there?

Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz, 384MB RAM. I think it originally came with 128MB.

Why on Earth was he running Win2k, and how can you live with an 8GB hard drive??

It was the best "home" Windows version after Win98 until XP came along? It doesn't have the memory requirements of XP? It was on the machine when he bought it? (Or whoever bought it first)

My first laptop had 20Mb (yes, megabytes) and had Word Perfect, Lotus, and a bunch of other stuff (including Ventura for DTP), running on a 286 processor with several bytes of RAM :-)

The phone I'm thinking of upgrading to at Christmas comes with 8Gb of storage as standard (!)

As our correspondent above suggests, it's the version that was installed when the machine was new.

In my young day we ran CP/M on a Z80 with 16KB of RAM and a single 100KB floppy, which really was floppy and made out of cardboard. My first 8086 machine, several years later, ran DOS and GEM in about 512KB of RAM, on twin 800K floppies.

Well, yes, but back then that was enough. I could quite happily fill ten times your stepson's drive and that's just the porn!
