As a half-dozen people on my friends-list have noted (and I'm sure others will follow), Gary Gygax has gone.

I never played D&D, but it's had considerable influence amongst many of my friends -- part of the shared cultural heritage of the community of which I'm part.

I'm in the same position as you - never played D&D but understand the culture.
