I'm not hearing-impaired and it irks me when people do that to me. For some reason, phrases like "pardon?" or "sorry, what was that?" seem to be interpreted as "I heard very well what you said and would like you to repeat it so that I can get cross with you", when actually what I mean is "I'm sorry, due to the ambient noise level or other distracting factors, I didn't quite catch what you said, but would like to have done so, would you mind repeating it?".

Between you and me, though, it is usually me not hearing what you said... I've allegedly got adequate hearing, but I seem not to hear and frequently have to ask you what you said, particularly as I am useless at lip reading - I think you mumble! But at least you don't mind repeating yourself 2 or three times - I suspect our old age will be full of shouting, or perhaps ardent and swift note writing on paper from me and something technical with buttons and wifi for you ...
