Casting Rincewind [Jan. 3rd, 2009|01:11 pm]
Douglas Spencer
We're watching "Terry Pratchett's Colour of Magic" on Sky 1.

It seems to us that David Jason is insufficiently scrawny for the role of Rincewind.

Julia suggests Richard E Grant for the role. I suggest Rhys Ifans. The outsider nomination is Russell Brand, but he's a little too good-looking.

I thought it was an appalling bit of casting. He is too old and too rotund.

Rhys Ifans is just about right.

McKenzie Crook? Stephen Merchant?

If I drew up a list of British actors 10,000 names long it wouldn't include David Jason.

John Laurie.
Although he's possibly a little too dead.

Del Boy? No, that'd never quite work...

Though why does physical build have to come into it? I was trying to think of someone who might bring something different to the mix, isn't the right stereotype, but somehow it might work well with the character. Sammo Hung? (Martial Law, the "large" chinese martial arts chappie) If he stuck to comedy escapes rather than comedy fights, that might work?

He shouldn't have been allowed to anyway as he already plays Albert (deaths assistant).

I would say Mackensize crooke would have been perfect. Another option would be Hugh Laurie but I expect you couldn't get him to do it.

Twoflower was also wrong and should have been someone like Jasper Carrott or the chinese bloke off Dexter.

I generally think they managed to completely muck up the casting and are definately not looking towards the longterm idea of making more of the books and having them fit into the series easily.

BTW I did mean to write that Rincewind from the books seems to be mid/late thirties (old enough to be a failurebut still young enough not to have achieved peace with that).

Rincewind should be just a bit younger than Twoflower who should be old enough to have had established himself in a career and had children but now have the ability to swan around on his own. Therefore Twoflower should have been early forties ish.

Frankly, I was surprised that Mr Jason wasn't announced as the 11th Doctor!
