Fanfic pairings: unfortunate contractions [Jul. 24th, 2009|07:06 pm]
Douglas Spencer
There's a shorthand in common use amongst certain groups of fanfic writers whereby they take the pairing they're writing ("Jack/Ianto", say) and contract the two names to give them a name for the pairing ("Janto", in this case).

It seems to me that occasionally you'll come up with an unfortunate result from this conflation... I'm thinking of Snape/Potter ("Snotter"), Mulcahy/Winchester ("Mulchester"), and Spock/Uhura ("Spuhura") as examples.

Can anyone arrive at any other particularly unpleasant contractions?

I'm thinking of Snape/Potter ("Snotter")

Probably for this reason, it's Snarry.

Spock/Kirk - I'm not sure which would be worse, Spirk or Kock.

For some reason the Ron/Hermione shippers don't call it "Heron".

"Uhock" doesn't sound any nicer.

I was very sad to discover that the largest Chekov/Sulu community has adopted "Sukov" as their pairing portmanteau. Even more sad is the "and yes, that IS a pun! WINK" additions to some icons. No, really? I couldn't have guessed, thank you for clarifying that for me.

Honestly though, you can only abuse a geek's enjoyment of puns so far.

One of my favorite Heroes pairings never catches the spellchecker's attention: Sylar + Mohinder = Mylar, which I believe is used in balloons and survival blankets. Heroes is pretty rife with the portmanteaus, for better or for worse... Mylar, Moheter, Petlar, Sylaire, Paire, Plaude, Mohelle, Syelle, Eclaire... in fact, the only popular pairing I can think of that isn't portmanteaued is the one between brothers, which is naturally dubbed Petrellicest, in the great tradition of Weasleycest and Wincest. The Winchesters are the source of "all incest is Wincest!" in some areas of fandom, which makes me wince.

I think I failed at coming up with unpleasant contractions, but I'm sure I just need a little more time, now that I've gotten all of this out of my head. xD

Spock and Scotty would be Spotty, or Scock.

I'd assume that X-files fic goes for either Mully or Sculder

What we need is a Spoonerism app.

Torchwood: Children of Earth. Frobisher and Jack would of course be Frack.
