A poll about holidays [Sep. 11th, 2009|08:55 pm]
Douglas Spencer
Julia and I would have opposite answers to this question.

Poll #1456273 Holiday Offline

You and your partner arrive for a week at your hired holiday cottage in the depths of the English countryside and discover that there's hardly any mobile phone signal and no chance of an Internet connection.

Speshul snowflake answer: I can't cope with a week's holiday, it's too long. I can handle a long weekend when there is a lot of organised activity.

I like polls like this, they raise interesting questions like "how the heck do you know Vin?" oh and what part of my lovely homeland were you visiting?

Regarding Vin, he may well have arrived via tickybox.

And we were roughly here.

Actually, I think Vin might be like Poggs, he comes free with the internet. :0)

That really is the homeland, or more acurately, the Motherland. Quaint, ain't it?

Very nice place. We were just across the road from the church -- the church clock is very accurate, but the bell which struck the hours is four minutes slow.

Why does anywhere with a name that starts "Chipping..." sound like the punchline to a dirty joke?

"Meh." I can live without comms tech but don't hate it.

I've just been away since Monday with no Internet. It was wonderful.

Ah, now. If I was on my own then Nooooooo, but with C then definitely Yaaaay! Although, a mobile signal means that work can still Get Hold Of Me, so on balance it's a Yaaaaaaay!

Isn't that the point of GETTING AWAY?

I couldn't stay there - our business depends on 24/7 coverage.

I've had this happen and it was Yaaaaaay!, but we were only there for a week and we hadn't seen each other for a month prior. I suspect I'd feel differently if it was a longer holiday and we planned to spend less time in bed :P

Oh dear god, wibbble and I would be having withdrawal symptoms about 5 minutes after arriving. I recently had occasion to be separated from my phone for about an hour (I physically could not reach it and there was no one around to give it to me) and I then memorised pretty much every detail about the room where I was, simply because my brain had to be working on something.

This, I think, is why I don't go away for holidays to cottages in the countryside.

I would oscillate so hard between the poles, you could meet all your electricity generating needs from me. Practically, though, what ramtops wrote.

This is to record that although Doug suggests that a week without is a "Nooooooo!" for him, when questioned he had to admit that actually it was fine. So there.

My partner lives 3 hours away usually so time alone with them and nobody else butting in would be just fine! :D If it wasn't with them though, the result would have been so different...
