That crossword clue -- solution [Nov. 23rd, 2009|12:16 am]
Douglas Spencer
The clue was "Starting-point for train-spotting", 7 letters.

If anyone's not yet had a go, they may wish to go and have a look at the discussion before they look at the answer.

After I'd dissuaded people from choosing "Glasgow", a curiously large number of people chose "station". There were two people who chose "buffers", one "railway", one "Edinbro", one "capital", one "platform", one "instant". And a few other guesses. Alas, none of these are correct.

andrewducker got impossibly close, when he commented saying I noticed that starting-point is an anagram of train-spotting -- and then went ahead with an incorrect guess.

and so, of the 14 people who guessed so far, only darth_tigger got it right.

"Starting-point for train-spotting" -- "anagram".

Thanks to all of you who took part.

Thank you for sharing. I do hate those recursive clues, but admire the ingenuity. No wonder my original thread reminded you of it.

I got as far as station but your advice of "If you don't *know* it's right - it isn't" told me I was wrong. Good clue.
