I have taken my inspiration from pTerry's "Unseen Academicals", and I'm attempting to channel Glenda Sugarbean and make a Ploughman's Pie.

I've just put it in the oven.

However, it looks like the top crust was made by an Igor, and I have the awful suspicion that I have, in fact, been channeling Letitia Cropley.

We'll see what it tastes like when it emerges.

So it's on my mind, as I have "turkey pie" on my list of things to make this week (turkey with lots of turkey gravy and mixed veg between two crusts). Being of the savory-pie-making persuasion, I have to ask:

does a Ploughman's Pie have cheese in it? and a crust on top (I take it)? and...???

From the book, we know that it's got both cheese and pickled onions in it. And that Glenda's peculiar skill is to ensure that the pickled onions are still crunchy -- which she manages by chilling them beforehand, and insulating them within a cheese wrapping while the pie is cooking.

As for my pie, it's got ham, apples, cheese and pickled onions in it. And a pastry case and a pastry top.

I'll try to do a photo, inside and out, later.
